Preparing for Egypt: What to pack, weather, and cultural etiquette

Preparing for the 43rd World Scout Conference? Whether you’re a seasoned Scout leader or are attending for the first time, bringing the right essentials and understanding local customs can make all the difference. From important documents to weather considerations and comfortable clothing, we’ve compiled a list to ensure you’re ready for an unforgettable adventure in Egypt. Read on to find out what you shouldn’t leave behind!

Packing essentials

  • Scout gear: First things first, don’t forget your scarf and official uniform!
  • Lightweight clothing: Egypt’s climate can be quite hot, especially from May to September. Pack breathable, lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen.
  • Modest clothing: Egypt is a predominantly Muslim country, so dressing modestly is recommended. Long pants or skirts and shirts that cover the shoulders and knees are appropriate for both men and women.
  • Layering pieces: For cooler evenings, especially if you plan to visit desert areas or attend events in air-conditioned venues, bring a light sweater or jacket.
  • Comfortable footwear: You’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, so pack comfortable shoes, like sturdy sandals or walking shoes.
  • Swimwear: If you plan to enjoy a pool or beach, bring swimwear. Some hotel pools may have specific dress codes.
  • Hat and sunglasses: To protect yourself from the sun, a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses are essential.
  • Sunscreen: High SPF sunscreen to protect against the strong Egyptian sun.
  • Insect repellent: Useful for the evenings and if you plan to visit any rural areas.
  • Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial in the heat.
  • Personal hygiene items: Bring your toiletries, including hand sanitiser and wet wipes.
  • Medications: Ensure you have a sufficient supply of any prescription medications, along with a basic first-aid kit.
  • Adapters and converters: Egypt uses 220V supply voltage and 50Hz, with plug types C and F.
  • Travel documents: Ensure you have all necessary documentation including your passport, visa (printed!), conference registration details, and any health certificates.

Weather

Egypt’s climate is generally hot and dry, with variations depending on the region and season. In August, daytime temperatures can soar between 30°C to 40°C (86°F to 104°F), especially in the southern regions and the desert. However, coastal areas like Alexandria may offer slightly cooler temperatures. Nighttime in the desert can significantly drop temperature, sometimes around 15°C (59°F). Remember to check the weather forecast regularly as you pack your bags!

We recommend bringing a light jacket or long sleeve to protect yourself from the air conditioner in the venue.

Local customs

Understanding and respecting local customs is essential to ensure a pleasant experience in Egypt, both for locals and you. Greetings are typically warm and polite. Handshakes are common, but always use your right hand, and men should wait for women to extend their hand first. A slight bow or nod can also be a respectful gesture, especially when greeting elders.

Egyptians value modesty, so dress conservatively. Both men and women should wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees, particularly in rural areas and when visiting religious sites. Women might find it useful to carry a scarf to cover their heads when entering a mosque.
Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, so it’s best to avoid holding hands, hugging, or kissing in public. When taking photographs, always ask permission before photographing people, especially women, and avoid capturing images of military or governmental buildings.

Egyptians are known for their hospitality. If you receive an invitation to someone’s home, consider it a great honour. It’s polite to bring a small gift, such as sweets or pastries, to show your appreciation. Tipping, known as “baksheesh,” is customary for many services, including those provided by hotel staff, drivers, and restaurant waiters.

As a predominantly Muslim country, Islamic practices influence daily life in Egypt. Be mindful of prayer times.

Enjoy the Conference and the unique cultural heritage of this historic nation!
